Irony  is a difficult word to define, but you know it when you see it.

People with COVID19 will not be treated on the Comfort or the Mercy on the west c oa st , the idea is to transfer those other patients to make room in on-shore hospitals for people so afflicted . Supposedly NY is asking for retired docs and students from medical schools to volunteer.

That would be a good idea if we knew who had COVID-19 and who didn’t.  The virus will find it’s way onto the ship.

But, at least more hospital beds.

I don’t see how a hospital ship moored in port is any different from a hospital on land when it comes to Covid-19 risk.

Your point is well taken, I was just highlighting the irony of the situation.

However, I’d still like to think it’s easier to clean and disinfect a purpose-built hospital facility than a 45 year old retrofitted oil tanker.

Sounds like a great idea to me! What could possibly go wrong?

On a related note, now is a great time to buy stock in them. Carnival is down 75% from a month ago. They’ll recover once this is over , it’s just a question of how far they'll keep falling until then.

Is a hospital ship really any worse than a hospital? They are both just big boxes with a central air circulation system. One just happens to float and is trickier to get out of. COVID would spread through either of them just as quickly, it may actually be easier to contain COVID on the ship given there will be less traffic on and off of it.

My in-laws got off their round-the-world cruise early, at the start of the virus outbreak (she’s a lung cancer survivor so has to be careful). At that point the ship was sort of boinking around Australia because the Asian ports they were scheduled to visit were panicking. From friends still on the ship, they’ve heard they’re heading to Oman to resupply, but to get there they have to go thru Somali waters. So they’re bringing armed mercenaries on board. And the cruise line is “slow” with the refund of the unused portion of the cruise.
